Overcoming Barriers to self-sufficiency.

Family Service Counseling is a comprehensive program that helps Families First participants overcome five major barriers to self-sufficiency. Participants in 26 counties in Middle Tennessee receive assistance addressing mental health issues, domestic violence, alcohol and drug abuse, learning disabilities and child behavior and health issues. The program is funded by the Tennessee Department of Human Services.

Family Service Counselors provide:
  • Screening for learning disabilities and referral for further testing
  • Screening and referral for addiction treatment
  • Referrals for long-term counseling needs
  • Short term counseling
  • Assistance in identifying needed medical exemptions
  • Advocacy to assist clients in obtaining SSI disability
  • Psycho-educational groups for financial management, anger management, parenting and stress management.
